Custom-forged cylinder head solutions engineered to exact customer specifications. Combining advanced technology with time-honored craftsmanship, every part meets strict durability and performance standards — proudly Made in America.
Special forgings in materials such as 316-L Stainless Steel for critical Section III applications, produced under a comprehensive Quality Assurance Program encompassing Mil I 45208, NCA 3800, and Mil Q9858 standards.
In-house normalizing heat treatment for forged cylinder head components, refining grain structure and relieving internal stresses to deliver improved tensile strength, toughness, and machinability for downstream processing.
Post-forging rough machining services that bring cylinder head components close to their near-net shape, removing flash and dimensional excess — reducing lead times and eliminating the need for a separate machining vendor.
Contour forging services in a diverse range of materials including Ferralium 255 duplex stainless steel, enabling complex geometry cylinder head profiles for demanding aerospace, defense, and power generation applications.

Our metallurgical experts review customer drawings and specifications to select the optimal material — from alloy steels and stainless to high-performance alloys like Monel K-500 — ensuring the cylinder head meets all mechanical and environmental requirements before a single die is set.

Co-Founder
Stephen Carr co-founded MTS Forge in 1986 alongside Edward Waddell, establishing the company on a foundation of metallurgical expertise and an unwavering commitment to quality. With a deep background in materials science and forging practices, Stephen helped shape MTS Forge into a recognized leader in precision forged components for aerospace, defense, power generation, and commercial nuclear industries. His hands-on knowledge of die forging processes, alloy behavior, and quality assurance protocols has guided the company's growth for nearly four decades. Under his co-leadership, MTS Forge invested in state-of-the-art pressing technology and developed in-house heat treatment and rough machining capabilities, enabling the company to deliver fully traceable, near-net-shape forgings — including cylinder heads — that meet the most stringent industry specifications.
Co-Founder
Edward Waddell co-founded Manufacturing & Technical Services, Inc. — operating as MTS Forge — in 1986, bringing a robust metallurgical background and extensive practical knowledge of forging processes to the company from its earliest days. Together with Stephen Carr, Edward built MTS Forge into a trusted supplier for some of America's most demanding industries, including aerospace, defense, commercial nuclear, and power generation. His expertise in material selection, closed die forging technique, and quality systems helped establish the rigorous QA program — including Mil I 45208 and NCA 3800 certifications — that underpins every component MTS Forge produces today. Edward's commitment to precision and customer service continues to define the company's culture and its reputation as a Made-in-America forging leader based in Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
The four main types of cylinder heads are flathead (L-head), overhead valve (OHV), overhead cam (OHC), and dual overhead cam (DOHC). Each differs in valve placement and combustion chamber design. For industrial and high-performance applications, forged cylinder heads are preferred across these types due to their superior grain structure, strength, and fatigue resistance compared to cast alternatives.
