Closed Die Forging
Our closed die forging process shapes aluminum lug nuts with tight dimensional control, producing a refined grain structure that delivers superior tensile strength and fatigue resistance compared to machined or cast alternatives.
MTS Forge manufactures high-strength forged aluminum lug nuts engineered for demanding applications where weight savings and structural integrity are non-negotiable. Using closed die forging techniques refined over nearly four decades, our aluminum lug nuts deliver superior grain structure, dimensional consistency, and fatigue resistance — purpose-built for aerospace, defense, motorsport, and precision manufacturing applications.

From raw aluminum billets to finished fasteners, we deliver end-to-end forging solutions built to exact tolerances.
Our closed die forging process shapes aluminum lug nuts with tight dimensional control, producing a refined grain structure that delivers superior tensile strength and fatigue resistance compared to machined or cast alternatives.
We manufacture forged aluminum lug nuts to exact customer specifications — custom thread pitch, seat angle, hex size, and overall geometry — supporting one-off prototypes and full production runs across aerospace, defense, and motorsport applications.
Following the forging process, our in-house rough machining services bring aluminum lug nuts close to net shape, removing flash and surface irregularities to minimize downstream processing time and reduce customer lead times.
Our in-house normalizing heat treatment services relieve internal stresses introduced during forging, producing uniform microstructure and consistent mechanical properties throughout each aluminum lug nut for reliable downstream performance.
For non-standard lug nut profiles and specialized seating geometries, our contour forging capability handles complex shapes in aluminum alloys, giving engineers design flexibility without sacrificing the structural advantages of the forging process.
Every forged aluminum lug nut produced at MTS Forge is backed by a comprehensive Quality Assurance Program with complete traceability — meeting Mil I 45208, NCA 3800, and Mil Q9858 standards for the most demanding procurement requirements.

Our metallurgical team reviews your drawings, thread specifications, seat geometry, and material grade requirements. We identify the optimal aluminum alloy and forging approach to meet your mechanical, dimensional, and weight targets before any tooling is committed.

Co-Founder
Stephen Carr co-founded Manufacturing & Technical Services, Inc. — operating as MTS Forge — in 1986 alongside Edward Waddell. Stephen brings a formal metallurgical background combined with decades of practical forging experience, giving him a rare combination of materials science depth and shop-floor expertise. Under his leadership, MTS Forge has grown from a startup built on quality and service principles into a recognized leader in the closed die forging industry. Stephen's understanding of aluminum and alloy behavior throughout the forging process has been foundational to MTS Forge's ability to serve exacting industries including aerospace, defense, and commercial nuclear — where dimensional precision and material traceability are mandatory, not optional.
Co-Founder
Edward Waddell co-founded MTS Forge in 1986 with Stephen Carr, establishing the company on a foundation of metallurgical knowledge and an unwavering commitment to forging quality. Edward's background in materials science and forging practice has shaped MTS Forge's technical approach to every product line — from flanges and upset forgings to custom closed die components like forged aluminum lug nuts. His expertise in alloy selection, die design principles, and process control has enabled MTS Forge to consistently deliver forgings that meet the stringent requirements of defense, aerospace, and power generation customers across Pennsylvania, Iowa, Kentucky, and Texas over nearly four decades of continuous operation.
A forged aluminum lug nut is produced by pressing aluminum billet material under high pressure into a die cavity, which aligns the grain structure to the part geometry. This results in a component with significantly higher tensile strength, better fatigue resistance, and greater structural integrity than a lug nut machined from bar stock, where grain flow is interrupted by the cutting process.
